Y u should make an effort to thrift more this year
Guys this is your sign to go to your local op shop
This weeks thoughts:
First off follow the associated Instagram account for this newsletter as I currently have only 7 followers and look really sketchy 💀.
Ok so I actually love thrifting so much it has turned into one of my favourite hobbies and I am going to try and convince u to thrift too. Also this weeks newsletter is kinda long (idk if it's a good or bad thing but yeah) because I have more free time over the New Year period.
Reasons to thrift:
Environment: Thrifting is better for the environment than normal shopping. It reduces texile and fabric waste in landfills as well as chemical and production waste because less clothing is produced. ♻️
Charity: Basically every thrift shop is some sort of charity organisation where the money you spend is pretty much a donation but ur getting cool clothes in return. Win win situation. 👍
Clothing range: The clothing range in thrift stores is actually so fun because you never know what your going to find. More often than not there are styles of clothing that you can't find in stores anymore (fast fashion is bad guys) but are still amazing. Also you can find expensive brands for really affordable prices.
Other trinkets: I love looking at the little vintage trinkets because u literally can't find them anywhere else (like tea cups and typewriters). 🕰️
Well being: Thrifting has turned into a hobby for me and whenever I'm in a thrift shop I just put my music on and go into my element. I always feel so independent browsing the isles and proud when I find a good steal. It's way more rewarding and fun than scrolling through Instagram that's for sure.
There's nothing to loose: There is literally nothing to loose (apart from like half an hour and fuel) from visiting ur local charity shop. Even if I browse and don't find anything, I find the fun in just looking at the clothes (like normal shopping).
Tips:
Speed: 🏃So all I can say is that it takes practice to get faster and more efficient at thrifting. When I first started I spent ages going though everything but now I just can tell whether I like something by the look or feel of a fabric. After you master the art of the 'scan' it is easy to thrift quickly and efficiently (pro tip: listen to a podcast or music while ur looking). Also don't be scared to touch the clothes, they don't have a weird second hand germ and you can wash it when u get home.
Quality: 💸First off, don't go for the cheap sagging fabrics (usually shirts or cardigans but also stretchy jeans), they obviously have been worn down and are probably not a good make. Instead go for fabrics that can endure age like corduroy, stiff denim and cotton.Secondly, look at the brand. It doesn't have to be a designer brand to be good. I would suggest looking for brands that u would usually buy in store, for me it's like Cotton On and Glassons (there's surprisingly a lot of Glassons in Red Cross stores for some mysterious reason).
Fit: 👖Obviously u want the clothes to fit but I would say that they don't have to fit perfectly if they don't have to. Pants for example don't have to fit your waist exactly (don't get smth that isn't twice ur size tho) as long as u think that a belt would do the trick. Jackets and shirts that are too big can also just be styled as baggy.
Don't give up: 😫If u don't find anything on ur first few goes that's fine come back next month (they have such different stock every time I go). I only find steals about 30-40% of the time but when I do it's amazing. Also a lot of the time charity shops are bunched in one street so u can just go and try next door.
Some things I bought so that you can be jealous and go thrifting:
Order from left to right: (don't mind my bad pic collaging skills)Very cool green cord jacket $15, Glassons vest $8, shirt that I can wear to the beach $10, Cotton on AC/DC shirt $10, Showpo dress $15, Glassons flare pants $12, brand new (still had tag $20) Cotton on bag $8, THRILLS jeans $12, another green cord jacket $15, brand new (still has tag $40) City beach skorts $12, Glassons cord jeans $8.
Side note of some good news:
Greta Thunburg is my hero:
Andrew Tate tried trolling Greta about how his luxury car emissons
Greta roasted him in return
Tate got angry and made a rant video with pizza in it
Romanian authorities arrested him for a human trafficking investigation
Hope you have a rewarding week
