Taylor Swift lyrics
Midnights + feminism
This weeks thoughts:
Ok so off the back of last weeks post, I wanted to post a more light hearted yet still interesting post on feminism. Then I realized that there r some amazing Taylor Swift lyrics on Midnights around society and young women that I needed to talk abt because they're so amazing and deserve recognition outside the Taylor Swift universe (also the Eras Tour started today so it felt fitting).
*Also I have sooo many more Taylor Swift lyrics that I can go into but idk if it's interesting for u guys or not so pls tell me if u want more.*
Lavender haze: 💜☁️
Omg ok, so the fact that this song is the album opener makes it even more superior but basically Lavender haze is abt ignoring hate/criticism from the public and being happy and enjoying the loves in your life. Not only is this song such a bop but I also think that it really brings up the social values and ideals that women are beginning to break away from more and more in the 21st century. The lyrics throughout the whole song express the idea that women can be happy and successful in life without being typical housewife i.e. getting married, having kids, quitting their jobs to be a full time mum (also these aren't necessarily a bad things to want but it's the fact that they don't NEED to be achieved).
e.g. “The only kinda girl they see, Is a one night or a wife”
“I'm damned if I do give a damn what people say""No deal, the 1950s shit they want from me”
*This concept is also in Midnight Rain with lyrics like “He wanted a bride, I was making my own name” *
Tbh when I first heard that this was track 5 I was expecting a way more down beat vibe but upon reflection this is defs a hard hitting and vulnerable song. You're on your own kid is about how you will ✨always be on ur own✨ sry that's an obvious bad explanation. But to elaborate, it's abt self-acceptance, reassurance and learning to overcome hardships knowing that it will be ok. Lyrics like, “I hosted parties and starved my body, Like I'd be saved by a perfect kiss” also highlight aspects of mental health and ways that some young people (women in particular) may romanticize their struggles wanting to be ‘saved’ by someone. The song rly amplifies that u shouldn’t necessarily focus on waiting for someone to ask if ur ok before you start to heal but to take on ur own responsibility over yourself for yourself. The bridge in this song is so beautiful because it then takes all this advice and turns it into an encouragement to seize the moment and enjoy everything that you have.
i.e. "So make the friendship bracelets, Take the moment and taste it, You've got no reason to be afraid"
Um so not only does this song have the most superior sounds but it's also calling out how fed up women are with men and how they are beginning to stand up to the kinda messed up systems of power rather than be oppressed. Also the fact that its called vigilante shit amplifies the notion of getting revenge and standing up for urself which is also genius for the story telling element of the song as well.
Exhibit A:
“While he as doing lines,And crossing all of mine,Someone told his white collar crimes to the FBI”
Exhibit B:
“Ladies always rise above, Ladies know what people want,Someone sweet and kind and fun,The lady simply had enough”
Bejeweled: 💎
Ahhhh Bejeweled is such a bop everything from the lyrics to the production just gives sparkly vibes. It is about looking back on a red-flag relationship and realizing ur own self worth, self confidence and empowerment. It does all this in such a fun way that it also shows that you can be happy living a single life by enjoying experiences and being treated how you deserve.
Exhibit A:
"Best believe I'm still bejeweledWhen I walk in the roomI can still make the whole place shimmer"
Exhibit B:
"What's a girl gonna do?A diamond's gotta shine"
Side note of what I have been listening to recently:
I am going through my Lorde phase...
Boy (I love Maisie she was the opener for Ed)
Hope you have a bejeweled week
